A Night In My Life
busbkbar.jpg (1304 bytes)

by Jill Maloy

"How long do we have to stay here"
The little boy whispered in the dark.
I'm so scarred, can you hold my hand?
Do you think he can hear the pounding of my heart?"

"Boy he sure was mad at you tonight
What did you say to him?"
"It doesn't really matter anyway,
For you, you just can't win"

She silently reached out her hand,
From her hiding place under the stairs.
And took her baby brothers hand,
His tears more than she could bear.

"You have to be still my sweet,
He'll find us if you don't"
"You won't let him hurt me" he asked
"You promised that you won't"

She gathered him in her arms
and sang him this little song,
But her heart and soul were screaming
At the all the things that were so very wrong.

Sleep now my little angel,
close your eyes and drift to sleep
I am right beside you to dry your tear
And God is here with us
to wipe away our fears.

As his breathing started to slow,
She brushed away the tear that threatened to fall,
She felt her whole body stiffin,
When she heard her daddy call.

She could hear him walking above her head,
But knew they wouldn't found,
And finally the house got quiet,
She could hear not a sound.

She woke up the next morning,
with her brother fast asleep in her arms,
She gently carried him back to his bed,
But he woke without alarm.

"Thank you for keeping me safe again "he whispered
"I know I can count on you"
"Go back to sleep my sweet little brother" I replied
Then gently whispered "And I love you too
